Chateau de Serres
The abandoned medieval village of Lastours is located in the Aude department, directly beneath the four famous Cathar castles. Deserted since its decline in the 13th century, the site is now being studied by archaeologists. The uncovered foundations offer fascinating insights into the daily lives of the people who once lived in the shadow of the massive fortresses.
The four forts are called Cabaret, Tour Regine, Surdespine and Fleur despine. They formed a powerful defense system and were one of the last bastions of the Cathars against the crusaders of the Albigensian Crusade in the thirteenth century.
After the fall of the castles and the end of the Cathar resistance, the place lost its strategic and economic importance. The survivors moved to the safer valley to escape the grip of the Inquisition and start an orderly life in the newly founded Bastide of Lastours.
The researchers found numerous everyday objects from everyday life. These include ceramic shards, tools, coins, and remains of looms. These finds prove that the inhabitants not only lived from agriculture, but also operated a lively craft and trade.
Yes, the area is part of the tourist path of the four castles. A well-marked hiking trail leads directly through the old foundations. Information boards explain the history of the village, and visitors can view the reconstructed floor plans of the former houses and churches.
