Périllos is a fascinating ghost village in the Corbières region of southern France, situated right on the border with the Aude department. The crumbling stone houses of this former medieval hamlet lie in a secluded spot at the end of a dead-end road. As residents gradually abandoned the village, nature reclaimed the deserted lanes, lending the place a melancholic and timeless atmosphere today.

Why was the village abandoned by its inhabitants?

The main reason for the abandonment of the village was the rural exodus in the twentieth century. The harsh agricultural conditions in the barren rocky landscape of the Corbières and the lack of connection to modern infrastructures such as running water and electricity drove the inhabitants into the nearby valleys. The last resident left the hamlet in the late sixties.

What architectural features characterize the place?

Architecturally, the place is characterized by a circular arrangement of houses that protectively surround the central square and the old church. This type of construction was typical of fortified medieval hamlets in the region, which isolated themselves from the wind and potential attackers. The buildings are made of local limestone and are partly covered with slate roofs.

Are there historical links to orders of knights or antiquity?

Nearby are the remains of the Oppidum of Montou, an ancient settlement from pre-Roman times. In addition, the nearby town of Opoul played an important role during the Crusades, as it was home to a Commandery of the Templar Order, which later passed to the Order of St. John. These historical layers make the entire region a mystical place.

What can visitors find in this abandoned place today?

Today, the hamlet is a popular destination for hikers seeking the surreal silence. The old church ruins lie as a picturesque relic on the highest point of the village. A few buildings have been restored by artists and dropouts in recent decades, creating an exciting contrast between natural decay and new life.
